About Bergen Philharmonic Chorus
Bergen Philharmonic Chorus was formally established in 1919, but actually the choir’s history is just as old as “Harmonien” itself, that is, from 1765. The choir continues to be connected with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and comprises of approximately 100 active singers. We rehearse each Wednesday in Grieghallen under the direction of Håkon Matti Skrede.
The choir has steadily improved over the past decade, as we have tackled more and more demanding works. Our recordings have been well received nationally and internationally and the increasing number of requests for our participation in a wide range of projects are signs of a choir with ambition that can deliver. A definite highlight is our recording of Janáčeks Glagolitic Mass, by Chandos Records, which was nominated for a Grammy Music Award in 2017 in the category of “Best Choral Performance”.
Come and join us!
Bergen Philharmonic Chorus is continually seeking good singers who would like to contribute to its development. If you want to prioritize choral singing and sing with one of Europe’s best orchestras in Bergen’s biggest concert halls, then perhaps we are the choir for you. Our repertoire consists of various choral works – from the old masters to the premieres of modern compositions. The choir’s speciality is not a particular style or era – we enjoy singing opera as much as the large liturgical works. Our “home arena” is the main stage at Grieghallen when we perform with the orchestra as part of their program or that of Bergen National Opera. The 2018/2019 season features among other Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem and Bernstein’s Candide.
You are welcome to audition!
Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester, i.e. beginning of January, and end of August. Please send in your details on our “Bli med” page.
We have a particular need for men’s voices, but sopranos and altos are also welcome to audition!
